How to market an iPhone app?

Since releasing Subnet Calc Pro three days ago, I have been checking my sales stats each day. I released it at £2.39 / $3.99 because I figured it’s quite a niche application and there’s plenty of 59p / 99c ones out there which are just a copy of Subnet Calc – i.e. not including all the extra features of Subnet Calc Pro. I’m not really sure where to go with the application because I have sold 6 copies in 2 full days of sales and I know it’s very early, but this is kind of what I expected to be honest. I’ve done absolutely no marketing so I am just going on people finding it themselves on the App Store.

So I’m now considering what I should do regarding marketing… should I do some advertising? Subnet Calc was reviewed by Softpedia as an app which “you’ll have remorse not paying for”, so perhaps I should contact them. Or maybe even I should use promotional codes to try getting some decent reviews.

Any comments, ideas, advice anyone?

First sale!

I’ve checked my reports on the iTunes Connect page and I noticed that one person in the US has bought Subnet Calc Pro already! Many thanks for the purchase if you are reading this.

I really hope that people like it…

I feel that I worked extremely hard on it and it was at a stage where it was ready to be released. However, I do plan to release updates in the future as and when I implement new functionality. I do have some plans, but any feature requests are much appreciated – simply pop over to the application page and submit a comment saying what you’d like to see.

Subnet Calc Pro: v1.0 Released

Subnet Calc Pro was released onto the App Store last night and I have set the initial price at £2.39 / $3.99. This is the first version and I expect to see how it goes and then I will look at releasing new features over coming versions. Version 1.0 includes very useful features over Subnet Calc such as being able to define hosts inside a subnet which can help to keep track of IP allocations.

I will be releasing a little guide onto this website soon which will show some screenshots to explain some of the features of Subnet Calc Pro

New Website!

Over the past couple of days I’ve been updating the look of this site because I realised that the old design wasn’t all that great. The new site should be generally easier to navigate around slowly I will move over my iPhone SDK tutorials into this site so that all things iPhone are in one place.

Please let me know any feedback which you might have.

Subnet Calc Pro: Sneak Preview 2

I’ve had another hard working few days and have got quite a way with the design of SubnetCalcPro. I’m beginning to realise the wonders of the iPhone SDK, but also I am regretting not planning the project better. I think that it’s still a reasonably small project and so I can safely make a few mistakes with planning because they won’t affect things too much. However, I have learnt so much for future projects with respect to working out in advance exactly what controllers will be implemented and the importance of a proper specification for each one.

Subnet Calc Pro: Sneak Preview

I have been hard at work the past couple of nights on my new version of Subnet Calc. I’ve managed to get the basics of it working and I have learnt a lot along the way. But because I feel I’ve achieved quite a lot I thought I’d share what I’ve done so far by showing off some screenshots of Subnet Calc Pro running on my iPod Touch. So here they are:

Top Level Organiser Drill Down the Organiser

These screenshots show the top level of the organiser view (on left) which is where all your subnets are now kept. From here you can start adding new subnets and also drill down (on right) through the subnets to create a hierarchy of subnets. I thought this would be useful as it’s something which I will definitely be using at work!

Creating a Subnet Editing a Subnet

These screenshots show the two different modes for viewing a subnet. The left shows a subnet being created for the first time and the right shows a subnet being edited which is also where you would view the subnet information at a later stage.

So, hopefully that has tickled your taste buds for more! Next to come is a means for automatically splitting a subnet up into sub-subnets (I really need a new name for that!) and a means for finding the smallest subnet which encompasses a given set of IPs.

Subnet Calc: “Remorse for not paying for it”

The kind people over at Softpedia have linked to Subnet Calc through one of their articles citing “… some apps are so useful you’ll be having remorse for not having to pay for the benefits.”

Well, thank you Softpedia for putting my app in your list of much needed applications. I decided to give away my application for free because I figured that I’d share what I’d learnt about iPhone application development with everyone. I am planning a much more full featured Subnet Calc which is going to provide some features which users have requested. This is going to be a separate application though so that there is still the option of the standard Subnet Calc as well.

Again, thanks Softpedia!

Subnet Calc: v1.2 Release

Version 1.2 of Subnet Calc has been released. You can download it from iTunes – just search for Subnet Calc or if you already have v1.0 installed then you can choose to upgrade.

This version is a minor release to fix a small issue where entering a malformed IP would result in the application crashing. I have also implemented automatic checking of what is entered into the text fields which helps with typos.

Quick Pass v1.0: Now available

Quick Pass v1.0 is now available on the App Store! Quick Pass is an application designed for system administrators who need to be able to quickly generate random passwords. You might use it when creating an account for instance.

Quick Pass was a bit of an experiment for me where I decided to develop and release an app all within one night. It took 2 hours 40 minutes over all and was accepted into the App Store within a few days. It was a fun experiment!

Quick Pass: An iPhone app in 2 hours 40 minutes!

At the company I work for, Senokian, we have been working on Operation Canine for the past 2 days which aims to be project which we design and code within 3 days – the final day is tomorrow. When I got home from work today I decided to undertake a similar task for the iPhone – I decided to see if I could design, code and submit an application within an evening.
