HoST : Hosting Server Tool

Ever set up a server? Ever managed a server? Ever wondered if there’s a tool out there to help you do these things? Well (as far as I know) there isn’t such a tool out there in the open source world yet.

That’s why Paul and myself decided a while ago that it would be a good idea to make one! I am hoping that we’ll actually get round to doing some work on it now that we’re both going to be working in Coventry. That is assuming we actually get some spare time!

So, watch out for it!

  1. Its going to rock. People are probably going to suggest Webmin but that is too complicated and overly generalised.

What we will hopefully seek to create is a usable server management system which allows admins from any OS background to take control of the power of Unix based systems and open-source software.

  2. Something for HoST to be capable of doing… NAS setup and management

  3. Yeh I agree – Webmin isn’t great. I used it a while ago and got hugely confused by it. The interface is hard to use and it doesn’t seem to integrate all that well with the system it’s running on.

Anyway, HoST will be an integrated system – we were actually talking about making a custom distro for HoST to run on… maybe…
